SYNOPSIS

Ramlee, Sudin and Ajis (three old bachelors) rented a room in a house owned by a young widow - Ciks Norma. Ramlee worked as a salesman (medicine seller), Sudin as a clerk and Aziz as a
lorry driver.
Sudin was in love with Zaiton, daughter of Cik Siti Tanjung Perak who lived nearby the rented house. Ramlee was not aware that he was loved by Cik Norma while Aziz still had no girl friend.
In the meanwhile, Sofia often came to Cik Norma’s house to borrow rice because of tight financial situation due to her adopted father’s bad habit of gambling and drinking liquor.
Cik Siti wanted to marry Zaiton with a rich man but was objected by Zaiton and this made Cik Siti unhappy and confronted Sudin’s mother when she knew from Ayu (Zaiton’s younger sister) that Zaiton was having a secret love affair with Sudin.
In the meanwhile, Ramlee was often misled by the girls he met to be his future partner. While alone at the riverside, Aziz saved Sofia who dived into the river to commit suicide.
Aziz brought Sofia to Cik Norma’s house and she received protection there because Sofia said her adopted father wanted to give her to a man as payment for his gambling debts but Sofia managed to free herself.
Sofia’s adopted father came to fetch her home and he fought with Aziz and Sudin for interfering with Sofia’s case. However, he was met with opposition from Ramlee who labelled his acts as unbecoming of a human being and promoting prostitution.
In the meanwhile, to settle the matter between Zaiton and Sudin, Ramlee suggested that Cik Norma become the arbitrator. When carried out, it was successful where Zaiton’s mother and Sudin’s mother settled their differences. Zaiton’s mother agreed to marry her with Sudin with a dowry of 1,000 ringgit with additional gifts and this was agreed to by Sudin’s mother.
Sudin was worried with the amount of dowry involved but his mother promised to get help by borrowing from Sudin’s close relatives. Ramlee, in his effort to attract the girls he liked, continued to be cheated while Aziz and Sofia planned to get married especially when Sofia’s adopted father had repented for what he did and blessed Sofia to marry Aziz and continue to live with Cik Norma.
The problem of Sudin’s marriage with Zaiton cropped up again when Sudin’s mother told that Sudin’s close relatives could not lend the money for the dowry. However, through Ramlee’s ingenuity (Ramlee, Cik Norma, Sudin, Aziz and Sofia) by pleading with Zaiton to take her mother’s diamond ring to be replaced with a fake one. With the ring, it could be pawned (and redeemed later).
The plan worked.
During the marriage between Sudin abd Zaiton and between Aziz and Sofia, Ramlee was cheated again when he was asked to surrender his clothing to the restaurant owner. This was because he was unable to pay for the food which he gave a child (who was waiting for his elder sister) and while eating, the sister invited many of her other brothers to eat together.
The wedding reception was momentarily chaotic when Ramlee came wearing badly torn clothing and at that moment Cik Norma told of her feeling to Ramlee. Ramlee was speechless for not realising all along that Cik Norma had crush on him. Immediately all of them faced the Kadhi (Muslim marriage official) to get married.

COMMENTS

After being successful with the three films he directed (“Penarek Becha” (drama), “Semerah Padi” (traditional) and “Panca Delima” (fantasy) - P.RAMLEE changed course to direct a comedy film.
P.RAMLEE was very interested in slapstick humour by 3 Stooges besides Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. So he took a story prepared by B.H.Chua (an imitation from a Chinese film which told of humourous incidents at a Hong Kong flat) with the dialogues and screenplay prepared by P.RAMLEE himself.
3 Stooges consisted of three comedy characters using their own names - Moe, Curly and Larry, and this film also used names - Ramlee (P.RAMLEE), Aziz or Ajis (Aziz Sattar) and Sudin (S.Shamsuddin). Real names were used not only for Ramlee, Aziz and Sudin but also among others Zaiton (Aton), Normadiah (Cik Norma), Dayang Sofia (Sofia), Siti Tanjung Perak (Cik Siti) and Rahayu Madji (Ayu).
In choosing the main characters to make his first comedy film, P.RAMLEE could be considered successful because Aziz Sattar, S.Shamsuddin and he himself were suited for the roles created - three old bachelors who had different characteristics just as Moe, Curly and Larry. In this film, P.RAMLEE can be considered as Moe in the 3 Stooges comedy.
This film can be considered successful from the acting aspect. It succeeded in entertaining viewers with their comical actions by all the actors and actresses especially P.RAMLEE, S.Shamsuddin, Aziz Sattar, Siti Tanjing Perak and Rahayu Majdi (S.Sudarmadji’s daughter) and the mother (Cik Siti). Normadiah was once partnered with P.RAMLEE in “Perjodohan” and therefore her acting was not disappointing. As a newcomer, Dayang Sofia’s acting was not good because she was more doing a drama rather than a comedy.
P.RAMLEE was not a comedian but he produced a film which could make people laugh. In fact, P.RAMLEE’s comedy was much better compared to “Perjodohan”.
This film not only gave entertainment but also many examples or lessons. Among them were, don’t get married by spending lavishly (through borrowing) because after having many children the debt still cannot be settled. Don’t gamble because it will make the father ready to even sacrifice his daughter. Don’t force a son or daughter to marry someone they don’t like even though the potential partner is rich and wealthy.
A scene which can be considered a classic and whoever watches it will laugh uncontrollably was when Aziz and Sudin were very determined to stop Sudin’s mother (Sa'amah) from entering the room because Cik Norma was with Ramlee (presumed to be romancing even though Ramlee was actually sleeping
and dreaming).
The acting by Aziz and Sudin were very hilarious especially when Aziz was confronted by Cik Norma. His facial expression was very comical. Cik Norma who was a bit shy rushed into her room with
a comical act too.
Other unforgettable comical scenes created by P.RAMLEE which have become a classic was when Ramlee sold a medicine to Manager (Malik Sutan Muda) who initially agreed to buy his perfumes but after losing a horse racing bet (through the radio news) he cancelled his intention. The dialogue, “Radiocar cigarette, tastes like cigar” and “Let me use coconut oil” were both very comical.
The question to Sudin at what time he came to work was also comical. Sudin took the question literally meaning how many watches and began counting how many watches there were that made his manager Malik (strict but good hearted) gave him money for 2 ringgit to ask him to repair his watch but the money would be deducted from his salary.
Another incident considered interesting was when Ramlee, Aziz and Sudin were eating the food they cooked themselves because Cik Norma lent them her cooking ware. They invited her to join them eating together. When Ramlee called Cik Norma he made a mistake by saying “tuan khemah” (the tent’s owner) instead of “tuan rumah” (the host or house owner). When Cik Normah rejected, Sudin said, ”Mari kita cekik” meaning “come we eat”.
Note: The word “cekik” is a very ‘rough’ word meaning to eat gluttonly. It is seldom used and, if used, it is only used among close friends and not to official guests in functions or celebrations. The purpose is just to create some humour.
Three different characteristics were highlighted in this eating scene: Ramlee was grimacing his face because the cooking had too much salt, Sudin was biting the tough chicken meat just like wood but Aziz just kept eating without any complaint. Aziz said, ”At this time Din, even if it is stone I will swallow it”.
On the whole, this film can be considered as one of the best comedy films P.RAMLEE ever directed. Success was not only achieved through it's presentation but also the response from film fans, especially P.RAMLEE’ fans. It can be said that after this film P.RAMLEE was more inclined to direct comedy themed films more than any other themes.

SONGS

Only 4 songs were found in this film:
1. "Resam Dunia" ("Dunia Ini Hanya Palsu") (P.RAMLEE & Normadiah)
2. "Manusia" (Jasni & Nen Junainah)
3. "Nak Dara Rindu" (P.RAMLEE)
4. "Kampung Nelayan" (Nona Asiah)
Composer & arranger: P.RAMLEE

"BUJANG LAPOK"

kesukaan ramai.
Sempena Ulangtahun Ke-60 "Bujang Lapok", telah diadakan Forum Tribut Bujang Lapok di Aswara (bakal jadi Universiti P.Ramlee), Kuala Lumpur pada 30 November 2017. Pak Mus telah diundang menyertai ahli panel tetapi terpaksa menolaknya kerana Pak Mus masih dalam keuzuran.
Perlu juga diberitahu, "Pendekar Bujang Lapok" Pak Mus tonton
di Sun, Kajang; "Ali Baba Bujang Lapok" (Rex, Ipoh); dan "Seniman Bujang Lapok" di Capitol, Kuala Lumpur.

Di Rex, Singapura tayangan bermula 30 November 1957

Di Capitol, Kuala Lumpur tayangan bermula 24 Disember 1957

BILA "BUJANG LAPOK" DITAYANGKAN?
Oleh Muszaili Mustafar

Di Kuala Lumpur, menurut kata Abahku (Mustafar A.R.), "Bujang Lapok" mula ditayangkan di Capitol pada 24 Disember 1957 (11.30 malam) selepas tayangan "Mister Cory" yang dibintangi Tony Curtis dan Martha Hyer.
Tayangan diulang sekali lagi pada 28 Disember 1957 (juga 11.30 malam), dan 31 Disember 1957 (Selasa) bermula tayangan harian dengan 6 pertunjukan - 11.00 pagi; 1.00, 3.15, 6.30 petang;

  1. Satu lagi artikel menarik sumbangan Filem Klasik. Tahniah Pak Mus, isteri dan anak-anak. Dalam penilaian saya antara "Bujang Lapok", "Pendekar Bujang Lapok", "Ali Baba Bujang Lapok" dan "Seniman Bujang Lapok", saya lebih menyukai "Pendekar Bujang Lapok".
